With over 14.000 employees and more than 10 million customers Achmea is the biggest insurance company in the Netherlands, closing 15 Billion in revenue. Achmea owns a variety of brands that all have their specific audience. For 1,5 year I designed for their biggest brand; Centraal Beheer on many different projects and in different teams as Senior UX Designer and Strategist.

The project

Besides delivering actual designs, 'design' as a discipline was still maturing in the organisation. Therefore the project was two-sided. On one hand it was about delivering designs and product strategies to the teams. On the other side it was about growing the design community and raising the overall level of design and way of working. But the biggest challenge was doing all this in a large, complex organisation that is closely regulated, full of legacy systems with endless dependancies and so many different target groups literally the whole country is 'the user'. In 2024 I moved to the position of UX Lead where I led the Design Chapter Zakelijk, overseeing the design team that supports both the Centraal Beheer and Avéro Achmea brand.

Deliverables

Centraal Beheer was making a shift to new Front-End technologies which gave us the chance to improve on a lot of legacy designs. I started out working on the my-environment, designing for specific products and ending with the top level dashboards.

​

At the same time I designed for a team that was building a complex funnel that allowed users for the first time to take out a specific insurance without the interference of an Achmea employee. All within the high standards the Dutch government sets for these type of products.

​

Another major part of my work was help building the Design System, developing generic components and UX patterns across all of Centraal Beheer's pages (almost 3.000 pages in total). On a weekly basis we worked with a large team on an endless list of components for app, web and mobile over different brands.

In addition I conducted different user tests, received a lot of training, coached and trained other designers in design craft, visual design, stakeholder management and giving proper design demo's.
